Chronic Pain, its Message, and Acupuncture
If you are living with chronic pain, you already know it is much more than a simple physical inconvenience. It is exhausting, frustrating, and deeply disruptive to your quality of life. But when pain persists for months or years, it helps to understand exactly what it is: a powerful, urgent message from your body [1].
While acute pain acts like a temporary alarm warning you of an immediate injury (like stepping on a sharp object), chronic pain is more like a faulty security system that refuses to shut down. It is your body’s way of signaling that something deeper is structurally, energetically, or emotionally out of balance. To truly find relief, we cannot just cut the wires to the alarm—we have to address the root problem.
The Cost of Kicking the Can: Unexpressed Emotion and Physical Toll
If you have lived with chronic pain long enough, you become intimately familiar with the medical shrug. You sit in an office, describe a body that feels like it’s failing or locked in a permanent state of alarm, and watch as a prescription pad comes out. The goal is simple: mask the signal, dull the noise, and push through.
Essentially, you are handed a strategy to kick the can down the road. This is the case for more than pain. Tinnitus [ 2 , 4 }and neuropathy [ 3 ] are two more examples of using a pharmaceutical to cover up a symptoms, or to make it more bearable.
In clinical practice, and through hard-earned personal experience, a fundamental truth becomes clear: you cannot afford to keep kicking that can. Eventually, the road ends, and the bill comes due. What conventional medicine often misses is that stubborn, chronic pain is rarely just a localized tissue glitch. More often than not, it is a desperate, intelligent signal from an overloaded bioelectric and nervous system trying to get your attention. And surprisingly, a massive driver of that physical distress lives in a place most doctors never look: unexpressed, unaddressed emotion.
When we experience stress, grief, fear, or trauma, we rarely process it as a purely abstract mental event. Emotions are not just ephemeral puffs of smoke in the mind—they are powerful neuro-chemical cascades, shifts in vagal tone, and immediate changes in tissue tension and micro-circulation.
Think about what happens physically when you experience acute fear or anger: your shoulders hike, your jaw locks, your breathing shallows, and blood rushes to your extremities. That is an acute survival program. Now, imagine what happens when an emotion is suppressed, ignored, or deemed “too inconvenient” to feel. The mind might move on, but the body remembers. The nervous system holds the brace. It stays stuck in a low-grade sympathetic fight-or-flight loop, bathing the tissues in stress hormones and maintaining a chronic state of neuromuscular contraction. Over time, that sustained energetic and physical friction literalizes into structural pain, inflammation, and restriction.
An ostensibly “purely physical” ailment—an unexplained joint ache, a stubborn myofascial restriction, or a chronic digestive flare-up—often vanishes not because of a stronger painkiller, but because an underlying, long-buried emotional weight was finally acknowledged, felt, and released. The physical body was simply carrying the message until someone was finally willing to listen.
Shoulder joint is very complicated (its all complicated really) and there are many reasons for its malfunction including trauma, overuse, and yes emotions.
In 5 element acupuncture which relies heavily on two specific concepts, great results can be achieved. 45 year old lady going thru menopause comes in due to one arm not raising over her head like the other hand. Within three sessions she had full ROM and improvements started with the first treatment and that is the second specific concept I want to mention: Energy Clearing! When it comes to acupuncture, what is really happening is moving of energetics around the body. There is the good “upright” energy, and there is also negative “pathological” energy. The negative energy is created by our thoughts and stresses, our environment, and who is around us, what we are watching or listening to, etc.
The first treatment I always do is to clear the body of this energy that isnt serving, and then start to build up or move the good energetics for optimal health and movement. This is an invaluable treatment in itself and Professor J R Worsley came up with that treatment, now all acupuncture schools around the country teach it!
Decoding the Message of Chronic Pain
When stubborn, chronic pain settles into your body, it is communicating a state of ongoing disharmony and over-activation across multiple layers:
The Biological Message
In modern biomedicine, chronic pain often signals a phenomenon known as central sensitization. Over time, your nervous system becomes hyper-reactive. Your brain and spinal cord begin to amplify normal sensory inputs, interpreting routine physiological movements as severe pain. At the same time, stubborn pain signals that your local tissues are trapped in a loop of cellular inflammation, poor blood circulation, and physical tension. Your body is essentially stating that its natural self-regulatory and self-healing mechanisms have stalled.
The Energetic Message:
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views this through a beautifully holistic lens. In TCM, optimal health relies on the smooth, unimpeded flow of vital energy (called Qi) and blood through a network of pathways known as meridians. The foundational maxim of this philosophy is simple: “Where there is stagnation, there is pain; where there is free flow, there is no pain.” Stubborn, chronic discomfort is the ultimate sign of energetic stagnation. It means your body’s vital resources are blocked, pooling, or unable to nourish your tissues.
Why Suppressing the Symptom Fails
Conventional medical approaches frequently address chronic pain by simply silencing the alarm [ 7 ]. Pharmaceutical interventions like prescription analgesics, muscle relaxants, or anti-inflammatories work by numbing your nervous system’s perception of distress.
While medication can provide vital short-term relief during acute flare-ups, it ultimately leaves the underlying systemic malfunction unaddressed. Dulling the pain does not clear the tissue stagnation, nor does it retrain a hyper-excitable nervous system. When the medication wears off, the root problem remains, and the body continues to scream for attention.
How Acupuncture Addresses the Root Problem
Acupuncture offers a comprehensive path to recovery by simultaneously answering both the biological and energetic messages of your pain [ 8 ] . By inserting exceptionally fine, sterile needles into targeted anatomical points, acupuncture initiates a profound dual-action healing response.
1. Breaking the Stagnation (The Traditional Philosophy)
By stimulating specific points along your body’s meridians, acupuncture acts as a catalyst to break up stubborn physical and energetic blockages [ 6 ]. It coaxes your Qi to move freely once again and forces stagnant blood out of tightly bound, painful areas. As circulation is restored, your body’s natural balance is reinstated, allowing tissues to soften, breathe, and heal organically.
2. Rewiring the Nervous System (The Biomedical Science)
From a scientific perspective, acupuncture directly modulates your central nervous system. The insertion of the needles stimulates local nerve fibers, which send immediate signals to your brain to release endorphins, enkephalins, and dynorphins—your body’s highly potent, natural pain-relieving chemicals. This biochemically “dampens” the hyper-reactive pain signals traveling up your spinal cord, successfully retraining a hypersensitive nervous system to calm down [ 9 ].
3.Extinguishing the Inflammatory Fire
Stubborn pain thrives on chronic inflammation [ 8 ] . Modern research shows that acupuncture works as a systemic anti-inflammatory therapy. It increases local blood flow to oxygen-deprived or damaged tissues, bringing a rush of fresh nutrients while flushing away metabolic waste and inflammatory proteins. This physically revitalizes the tissue at the very site of your discomfort.
A Lasting Solution for Your Well-Being
Because acupuncture addresses the physical tissues and the neurological pathways, its benefits are structurally transformative. Large-scale clinical data, including massive patient meta-analyses, confirm that the pain-relieving effects of acupuncture persist long after the treatment sessions end. It is not a temporary mask; it is a true systemic recalibration.
Your chronic pain is not a life sentence—it is a call for help from a system that has lost its way. Instead of forcing your body into silence, acupuncture safely engages with your body’s own healing intelligence. By treating you as a whole, interconnected person rather than just a collection of symptoms, we can help you decode your body’s distress, resolve the underlying stagnation, and step back into a vibrant, pain-free life [ 9 ].

Guide for Acupuncture in Dupont Circle
No introduction or guide on acupuncture would be complete without a brief history of what acupuncture is, how it works, and how it can be that it can help with so many different conditions. Understanding what the underlying mechanisms are, and the media or the conduit thru which acupuncture brings about its various activity and resolutions is key to demystifying acupuncture.
Acupuncture is a system of medicine that came about in the far east and the orient brutal summer heat, high winds, extreme damp, etc. Not surprising, the ancients way of describing the body mimics, to an extent, some of the same descriptions they used regarding the weather. Their system of medicine works however and has been helping millions of people throughout the millennia.
This is achieved thru their concept of yin and yang, and manipulation of the energetics in the body, and the fact that this dynamic energetic substance flows thru the meridians and can be accessed thru acupuncture points for a variety of effects on the road to bringing the body towards balance. That’s how the body heals: bringing the different system of the body back into “balance” using hair-thin needles an or herbal medicine, which brings with it an incredible number of positive outcomes. The theory behind oriental medicine is a relatively simple one, but the practice of this medicine becomes complex, as various variables are added as no two individuals, are the same and at Summit Healing Arts acupuncture in Dupont Circle Washington DC, your treatments are as unique as your fingerprints and may not repeat from session to session.
Recently there was a new discovery( 1 , 2 )! Its actually an old one but one that got revisited again by the researchers as it is potentially such an important find, once they can make sense of it. It turns out, according to observations made by pathologists looking at slides, that there is an additional organ in the body previously not named! They find that throughout all organs, and connecting the organs is a pathway for fluids to travel and this pathway had not been named before or studied at all.
In Oriental medicine, in addition to the known organs such as stomach, liver, bladder, etc, there is an additional organ (system) called the san jiao, or triple warmer. This organ san jiao is responsible for physical properties such as water and temperature regulation as well as spiritual qualities of circulating warmth and passion, playfulness, and plain joy. When out of balance, we feel flat, maybe depressed, lack joy, and see no brightness in our life. This sounds like an incredibly important organ yet it has been ignored up until now, except in oriental medicine and acupuncture. At Summit Healing Arts in Dupont circle DC I have several patients who call this san jiao meridian the happy meridian. Imagine going to a practitioner with anxiety or depression and you are given a pill to help you get better and does nothing with this “happy” meridian!
Summit Healing Arts since 2008: Transforming lives at my Acupuncture clinic in Dupont Circle DC
What we do at Summit Healing Arts is literally life changing for most people. Think about how amazing it is that a system of medicine can “open up” our thinking or give us inspiration or courage to take action on something we have been meaning to do for a long time! How valuable is that? What pill or procedure, other than acupuncture done by an expert with years of experience can help with spiritual disharmonies? None that I know of or I would’ve studied it and tried to help people in that way.
My clinical approach often reveals powerful, hidden connections between seemingly unrelated symptoms. For example, a 76-year-old patient came to me suffering from both coronary artery disease (CAD)—experiencing chest tightness after heavy meals—and persistent, distressing tinnitus. Recognizing that the inner ear is one of the body’s most metabolically demanding organs, I reasoned that his tinnitus wasn’t an isolated ear issue, but a localized energy crisis. When his cardiovascular system was stressed by high-fat foods, the micro-vessels supplying his inner ear were deprived of vital oxygen and glucose, essentially causing the auditory nerve to ‘hallucinate’ phantom ringing [ 10 , 11 ] . By prescribing a classical formula designed to clear microvascular stasis and restore deep tissue perfusion—we successfully resolved both his chest discomfort and his tinnitus. What was considered a bold leap in clinical deduction a decade ago is now directly validated by modern neuro-otology, proving that when you treat the vascular root, the entire body heals.
Here is a testimonial from one of my dear clients who is now in LA: from Google: Artin Mahboubi changed my entire outlook on life; something I never foresaw happening but am so pleased it did. I began seeing him mostly to treat anxiety that was affecting me emotionally and physically. The concept of Eastern medicine was new territory for me, but what Artin said made sense: that I would not heal without viewing my life in completely different ways. I’m now a believer in the power of acupuncture, and can’t talk about it enough to those in my life.
What I enjoyed most about my time with Artin was his authenticity when it came to healing. I often find going to medical professionals uncomfortable, but I fully trusted in his treatment process because he was so empathetic to my issues. Plus, nothing Artin does is generic— he makes specific, tailor-made plans for the betterment of your health. I have yet to find a Western doctor who genuinely cares as much as Artin does. I wished I still lived in the D.C. area only so I could continue to see him. If you want to make significant changes in your life, go see Artin!
Another example of Transforming lives with Acupuncture and Herbal medicine
from yelp: “I don’t even know how I’m going to put this into words. In short, Artin was my beacon of hope when I thought there were nothing and no one that could help me get better. I went through a mysterious number of symptoms after being prescribed medication earlier this year–hives, circulation and digestive issues, acne, anxiety to name a few–and I found Artin at a point where I thought I’d never recover. Not only has he been kind, patient and gracious with me in my anxiety-ridden and high-strung state, he has helped me consistently improve during the last several months that I’ve been seeing him. He has been a great collaborator and communicator, always working with me to identify symptoms and underlying causes. Most importantly, he has helped me begin to change my mentality, switching focus from dwelling on the negative to being present and focusing on all the positive aspects of life. He’s become a trusted adviser and someone I lean on when I feel like I’m plummeting back into the dark place. I will continue to see him for as long as he’ll let me come back and would recommend him to anyone and everyone looking to improve their overall wellness. I’ve seen other acupuncturists and no one compares.”
I have worked with some very difficult medical situations that required some serious detective work, and am happy to report incredible results for my clients.
A 60-year-old client of mine had been struggling with a cough, sputum, shortness of breath, and frequent bronchitis and bouts of antibiotics for years when I met her. Improvements came after the first visit but after few months of weekly treatments she has been able to get off of her antibiotic regiment and is able to breathe freely with no asthma or wheezing. This case is one of my favorite cases as the situation was pretty dire and is now quite rosy. Another even more scary situation was when I had a young lady who had been infected with a tuberculin type bug named xenopi. The literature did not paint a very happy ending for people infected with this bug. After determining why she got this bug to begin with, and taking necessary measure to reduce exposure, she started to show continuous improvements and it finally cleared up!! Of all the great success that I have had at Summit Healing Arts, this one was one of the most satisfying cases as immune modulation and enhancement is my specialty.
