Inflammation and Brain Fog
Conventional medicine has shown that inflammation is the root of a lot of chronic and progressive health problems. When there is an autoimmune condition affecting a region of the body, internal or external, there is inflammation at the site of the disease, but because the brain and the immune system communicate very closely, there is going to be inflammation occurring in the brain as well! There is to be inflammatory modulators signaling monocytes in the brain which then secrete inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha. The signaling then leads to inflammation in the brain, which affects cognition and memory, and speech. Often, glucocorticoids such as cortisone is prescribed to dampen the effects of the immune system when trying to control the autoimmune condition, but cortisone brings with it a whole host of other problems. In the brain cortisone itself can exacerbate this brain fog problem through a complex pathway involving normal neural transmission.
Brain inflammation and the brain fog that comes as a result then leads to episodes of forgetfulness and lack of focus. Needless to say this affects our performance adversely, and if left untreated can progress.
So what do we do for this brain inflammation? At the present time, there are no safe and effective medicines, however Oriental medicine with its tools such as acupuncture and herbal formulas specially, can address this phenomenon, as well as the organ system involved in the auto-immune condition very effectively. Inflammation is the root of all evil when it comes to chronic conditions and Alzheimers, which is as chronic as they come, is helped by reducing inflammation in the brain, whether thru diet, or herbal medicine or acupuncture, exercise, meditation, or a combination of all of the above, it is definitely worth checking into.
