Imposter syndrome and infinite intelligence
What exactly is imposter syndrome, why is it so common, and how can acupuncture help?
Imposter syndrome is defined as the inability to see ones own worth, and the value of their accomplishments, whether it be academic, professional, athletic, or artistic. There is a feeling of not belonging, of not deserving of their success. Harvard Business Review describes it as: “Imposters’ suffer from chronic self-doubt and a sense of intellectual fraudulence that override any feelings of success or external proof of their competence”.!!!
Sounds like a pretty complicated neurological/psychiatric issue that could take years of therapy to solve. Yet I want to share with you a brilliant system that addresses imposter syndrome rather remarkably: its five element acupuncture. Although you can read about five element acupuncture later as its a fascinating subject and cant be fully covered here, suffice it so way that this form of acupuncture addresses the spirit of a person better than any other method that I am aware of. And if imposter syndrome is real (its very real), the spirit surely plays a big role.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and specifically five element acupuncture, the spirit is that aspect of our being that embodies consciousness, emotions, and thought. The spirit resides over activities that take place in the mental, spiritual, and creative planes. The spirit is what is connected to the great big intelligence in the sky. According to some philosophies, we are manifestations of infinite intelligence and having a human experience. Thru any number of reasons, we lose this connection with the heavens, and no longer see value in “things”, including ourselves. This is an imbalance in the metal element, which controls/is made of lungs and large intestine. Lungs are about taking in value (that oxygen has huge value), and large intestine is about letting go of that which no longer serves (the last of the water and nutrients have been absorbed and its exit time).
When this element is in balance, we have: inspiration, completion of tasks, a rhythmic order and the space to take it in. Pride and humility are of utmost importance. Forever trying to prove own worth: we deserve to exist, we have value.
When metal element is out of balance: unable to breathe in one’s own brilliance, unable to get a sense of completeness, have a strong sense of emptiness inside, sense of deep longing for father, spirit, honor, completion!!!
This is exactly what my patients with imposter syndrome have show up in their lives.
