Peripheral neuropathy responsive to electroacupuncture
Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the nerve of the periphery (hands and feet) resulting in severe and sometimes constant pain. Peripheral neuropathy can have different causes: chemotherapy induced or diabetic neuropathy.
A study that just concluded in Korea showed that electroacupuncture worked better for overall pain level, and is completely safe and well tolerated. There was a better than 50% reduction in the level of pain for those in twice weekly for 8 weeks group vs the control group which got no acupuncture. The study conducted included patient with peripheral diabetic neuropathy. I suspect next they will be looking at chemo induced peripheral neuropathy. I know from past experience that acupuncture is beneficial for peripheral neuropathy induced by chemotherapy as well.
Electroacupuncture was safe and tolerated well. Acupuncture treatments, which help with so many different problems now has proof that it can be a safe and effective alternate to pharmaceutical interventions such as Gabapentin , which just numbs the pain and discomfort and doesnt address the underlying problem at all, which is nerves getting damaged, either due to years of high blood sugar (diabetes) or damage due to chemo and or radiation. Neuropathy due to chemo and or radiation may need the addition of herbs. Herbs that provide blood and other nourishing compounds to help regenerate the nerves along with the increased flow of qi, which is the energetics that acupuncture modulated and is the energetic basis of life.
