My passion for acupuncture came about after a sports injury that left me in excruciating pain that was not letting up even after six weeks! I seeked the advice of an orthopedic surgeon believing I must’ve really screwed things up this time since no improvement in pain or functionality after quite a while (6 weeks), and he advised me that the type of injury to my shoulder that I was experiencing did not need surgery and that it was going to take some time to heal. He recommended I take Advil for the pain and let time take care of things. At the time I was working in an immunology laboratory and ironically our goal was to understand and provide solutions for peoples health problems, specifically auto-immune related health issue, and now here I was needing some help myself and the only thing available to me was a drug which brought with it stomach upset, liver toxicity, and was basically a coverup for the pain until the body healed itself. I wasn’t too crazy about the options before me so I looked for other possible solutions. A friend of mine recommended I try acupuncture! I was skeptical at first because as a man of science, I did not “understand” how the insertion of a thin needle could possibly repair a badly injured shoulder where the movement was an impossibility. I gave it a try however and after one session the pain had reduced so much that I was simply amazed and as a student of biology I wanted to learn more; everything I could learn in fact. After a course of treatments, I decided I must study this mysterious form of medicine and help people in the same way while trying to understand how it works and maybe even contribute in some way to this ancient yet scientific form of medicine and healing. I enrolled in the acupuncture school in San Diego and it has been an amazing journey in healing.
